Perhaps inspired by Jim Beam, Guinness breaks the "no-preaching in beer ads" rule.

1/28/2014

Not long ago, we lamented here how liquor marketers ignore unwritten beer-advertising rules and make some terrfic ads in the process. One of those rules crushed by the booze guys is "never preach to young men."

Now a beer ad* for Guinness has broken the rule, too. With exceptional results.
And not only did the Guinness guys go along with the booze guys' rule-smashing, the inspiration for their "life's about choices" message could've easily come from a Jim Beam ad...
"Life boils down to a series of choices" and "The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character."

Beer and booze. Preaching about character. And It works for both.

* Advertising Age reports the Guiness ad has just two days to run: "..the ad must be pulled soon to comply with U.S. Olympic Committee rules that generally prohibit marketers who are not official sponsors from featuring Olympic competitors, according to Guinness. This year's ad blackout runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 26."
